Description: The data set is an ESRI ARCINFO GIS shapefile. The data set consists of the Study Area boundary defined for the 384 principal battlefields of the American Civil War as identified in the 1993 "Civil War Sites Advisory Commission Report on the Nation's Civil War Battlefields." The report was prepared at the behest of the U.S. Congress. The Study Area boundary defines tactical context and visual settings and reflects the historical extents of the battlefield as it is known through research and on-site investigations.
